The Esraj is a bowed string instrument known for its hauntingly expressive tone and versatile melodic range, widely used in Gurbani Kirtan, classical Indian music and devotional compositions. Blending the qualities of the Dilruba and the Sitar, the Esraj offers a soulful voice that resonates deeply with the spiritual essence of Raag music.
Although its exact origins are contested, the Esraj became popular in India around 300 years ago. It was popularised in Kirtan by the musically gifted Namdhari community, while at the same time becoming a beloved instrument in the Eastern regions of India.
