The Sarangi is one of the most emotionally powerful bowed instruments of India, dating back to the 13th Century. In Sikh history, the Sarangi holds a respected place in the Dhadi musical tradition, popularised by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji after establishing Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib. The instrument has seen a re-emergence in classical Raag Kirtan in recent years.
Crafted from a single block of hardwood and played with a traditional bow, the Sarangi’s many strings create a resonant, layered sound full of emotion and nuance. This raw and captivating sound is at once arresting and soulful.
